We told you about the New Delhi superbug NDM-1 some time ago; the first case was discovered back in January 2008.
Well there are now some 25,000 deaths in the EU from bacterial infections that are outsmarting the most powerful and the latest antibiotics we have available today according to the BBC. They are genetically resistant to carbapenem antibiotics, the last resort in antibiotics.
According to the Cardiff University Researchers who discovered this bacteria, it has now infected Delhi’s drinking water supply, therefore MILLIONS of people could be carriers.
Zsuzsanna Jakab, WHO regional director for Europe, said: “Antibiotics are a precious discovery, but we take them for granted, overuse and misuse them: there are now superbugs that do not respond to any drugs.”
